DIY Denim

jeans | topshop

As you can see, I've been busy transforming an old pair of jeans into a new pair of denim shorts! I don't have a pair of denim shorts that actually fit me or that I like and with the lovely weather in the UK at the moment I realised that I really needed a pair. I never wear jeans so I had the perfect DIY opportunity!

I didn't research beforehand how to actually do this so I was just going by the materials that I had in the house at the time and what I thought. First, I decided what length I wanted the shorts to be, I didn't want them too long or too short. I used a pen to mark lightly where I wanted to start cutting then began to cut the legs off with scissors. It would have been more appropriate to use fabric scissors but I didn't have any at the time!

Then I turned up the bottom of the shorts and used pins to hold the positions in place ready to sew as you can see in the bottom right hand photo. I wish I had my own sewing machine but unfortunately I don't and if I'm honest I'm really not the best on one anyway, so I made the best of what I had and used a needle and thread instead to sew the hem on at the top of the turned up pieces. I used a blue thread so it would blend in with the colour. I did this all the way round the front and back of the shorts until I was happy with the result.

It can get a bit annoying/fiddly using the needle and thread but if you just work with it then it should turn out ok! I'm certainly not saying I'm a pro at this and there are imperfections! But I'm happy with them for the most part and I now have a new pair of denim shorts without spending anything! I'm thinking of adding some studs to the front/back to give them a bit more detail aswell.

Please let me know if you have any other DIY ideas that you might have tried out before!

Hope you're all making the most of the weather!

  1. What a great idea! I'm definitely going to try this with my old pair of jeans. I bought a dress a while ago that I didn't really like the top of, it was like jersey material so I made it into a really cute skirt. I love finding new DIY ideas to try out, thanks for sharing x
